Scouting for Food

Help Us  Help The Hungry

Pack 4  Scouts need your help

Munhall Area Boy Scouts need your help

ThisAugust an estimated 8,000 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will fan out through Allegheny county neighborhoods to help the Hungry. The Scouts originations of the Steel Valley area will be among them. Cub Scout Pack 4 will be out in full force to make this a successful event; however, we cannot do it without the continued support and help of our communities.

Since 1910, the ideals of Scouting have guided young men toperform "service to others and to the community."  Responding tothe plight of America's poor and hungry is conducted in the spirit of the originalBoy Scout moto "Do a good turn."

During World War I, Boy Scouts planted vegetable gardens toprovide food for the hungry. President Roosevelt called on Scouts to collectfood for the needy during the Great Depression.  Planting Victory Gardenswere the Scouting "good turns" organized during World War II.Today, Boy Scouts continue their community service by helping the hungry insouthwestern Pennsylvania Thenational initiative “Good Turn for America” encourages companies, communityorganizations, and Scouts to be involved in local community-service that fightshunger through their participation in Laurel Highlands Council’s AnnualScouting for Food drive.  Since 1987, over 108 million units of foodhave been collected and distributed to Allegheny and local county food banks.

Scouting for Food is targeted primarily at collecting cannedfoods, particularly canned products having a high nutritional value.  Inaddition to food; paper products, soap, and bulk packages of householdcommodities are needed.  Emphasis is placed on certain recommendedproducts.  The recommended items are any kind of canned fruits, vegetables, as well as sealed, dry packaged foods such as cereals, or pastas.

In general, the drive is not prepared to accept perishable items such as produce, milk, ice cream, frozen food, and other perishable products. The drive is prohibited from accepting any home canned or packaged food, baby foods in glass jars and any food having the package seal broken. If large quantities of perishable products become available, please contact the Scouting for Food office at the Laurel Highlands Council at (412) 325-7931 for instructions.

Starting the week of Apri l2th Munhall Area scouts will be distributing door hanger’s door-to-door in Munhall, West Homestead, Lincoln Place and  West Mifflin area marking phase one of the annual ‘Scouting for Food’ effort, now inits 27th year. At the end of that week, phase two will commence when the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts return to these same neighborhoods to collect your donations.  We are asking residents to put the items in a bag on your porch with the door hanger attached. A filled bag will go a long way, but even a single non-perishable item like a canned good will help someone in need.  The Scouts are asking for non-perishable items like peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned fruits, tuna fish, dry boxes of noodles and more. According to Boy Scouts of America’s, approximately 15% of households will actually donate food, but more than ever, we need your help to pitch in,ensuring that the  Area Scouting for food drive is able to continue providing food to those in need.  “A small, five percent increase in participation during ‘Scouting for Food’ would equate to thousands of pounds of additional food donated.”  PLEASE HELP YOUR COMMUNITY SCOUTS FEED THE HUNGREY!

Pack 4 asks that if you would like to donate directly to the Scouts, or allow us to put a collection bin in your place of business, please feel free to contact them
